Hotel Security Checklist

Follow these simple tips to make your next trip more secure.

Do your research:

  • Read reviews to ensure previous guests did not have security concerns.
  • Ask if the hotel restricts access so only guests with keycards can use elevators and access guest floors.
  • Make sure the hotel is not located in a high crime area.

While checking in:

  • Do not say your first name aloud. Only use your last name or Mr. or Mrs.
  • Request a room on a mid-level floor. Lower floors are less safe; higher floors pose a higher risk during a fire.
  • Ask the front desk agent to write your room number down instead of saying it out loud.
  • If you check in late at night, ask someone to walk you to your room. Or, if you have driven to the hotel, call to ask if someone can escort you in from your car.

During your stay:

  • Check closets and bathrooms when entering.
  • Identify the nearest exit in case of an emergency.
  • Use the deadbolt lock at all times. You can also purchase a travel door wedge to slide under the door.
  • Lock all windows and balcony doors.
  • Only open the door if you are expecting a hotel employee. You can call the front desk to confirm the person’s identity if someone comes to your door unannounced.
  • Hang up the “Do Not Disturb” sign when out.
  • Keep your phone charged and in the same location at all times so you can easily locate it during an emergency.
  • Lock all valuables in your room safe. The safe at the front desk is the most secure place to leave a laptop computer during the day.
  • Don’t display your room key in public. Thieves could charge meals to your room number or enter while you are away from your room.
  • If you lose your room key, ask to move to another room. You may not have lost it.

If parking at the hotel:

  • Park as close to the exit as possible.
  • Do not leave valuables in your car.
  • Try to walk in groups through parking lots.
  • Have your keys in your hand while walking to the car.
